End Of Semester (Reflective Statement)

For me I'm so satisfied with what I learned in this semester. I improved in many things such as listening, writing and also reading. Before this semester I was suffer in listening and I was got in any listening test between 50 and 60 but now I feel that I can get more than 70 and also same thing in reading and writing. Now I know the skills of listening for example I know that I must read the question first and concentrate when the speaker beginning. I think the good thing in this semester was the listening because I improved in it so much. On the other hand I think that bad thing in this semester was the speaking Arabic in the class more than English and this effect in our level. For my class I asked my friends maybe every week about the course (English 175, English 174) and every one said to me that he happy with this semester. For you miss I think you did the best to improve our level and I will be frank with you miss, I studied in the petroleum institute for two years with English teachers and nobody improve my level as you. Finally I think there are many advantages in this semester and the important thing that is learn what you can to support you in level 3.

Line Graph ( Canada & visitors )

This line graph shows the number of visitors to Canada from Italy and Belgium 1997 – 2006. Overall, there was a dramatic increased of Belgium visitors to Canada between 2000 and 2001.

From 1997 until 1998 the number of Belgium visitors increased sharply and constant for one year until 1999. The numbers of Italian visitors increased gradually from 1997 until 2000. From 2000 to 2001 the numbers of Italian visitors hit the top after that it decreased gradually until 2005 and then increased again until 2006. From 1999 to 2000 the numbers of Belgium visitors hit the bottom and directly after that it reached the peak between 2000 and 2001. From 2001 to 2005 the numbers of Italian visitors decreased gradually and after that increased again until 2006.

In conclusion, in 2001 both countries reached the top and also the difference was not very big between them. Also in the last year which between 2005 and 2006 the visitors for both countries increased.

Famous Person

My name is Pele and I was born in Tres Coracoes Brazil. I'm 57 years old and I have only one son. I believe that I should not through from the balloon because I did many specials things. First I'm scored more that one thousand goals and nobody did this accept me. Also I improved this game and make it the best game in the world. Most of people now love football because of my skills and my goals when I was playing. On the other hand I did some thing very special which nobody can disagree, I reduced the criminals and deal with drugs in Brazil and also in many places by make these boys who don’t have work play football and use their skills in some thing good. I think that I did specials things more than other also the others did normal things so I should not through and stay in the balloon.

Masdar City & My opinions

What is Masdar City?

Abu Dhabi government going to build a city called "Masdar City" which can help to reduce the carbon dioxide and in the same time save the energy. Abu Dhabi government try to make this city depend on natural sources only such as solar energy, wind etc with out the use of fossil fuels. This city will be with out any cars or factories or any thing can pollute the air or the earth.

What are your opinions about it?

I think that the succeed of this project is very difficult because they build it for a few people (thousand of people) but in the world there are more than billions of people. Also I think it's very difficult to live without cars in these days because in every day you need it to for your transportations. Last thing these styles of cities cost a lot of money so it's very difficult to build many of it.

(Key Words & Bits Words)

Key Words

Carbon-neutral
Air-conditioners
Cooling
Frosty
Environmentally friendly
Efficiency
Ambitous
Cool
Hyper-efficient
Carbon dioxide

Bits words

Have to walk or take public transport to get around.

Buildings here are often spaced too far apart.

World can live without using too much energy or materials.

The resources are extremely cheap.

Public transport and waste recycling programmers are virtually.

The city of 50000 will cut its energy usage by 50-70 per cent.

Surrounded by acres of photovoltaic solar panels and wind turbine.

Which will help power the city’s air conditioning systems.

Alternative energy projects elsewhere make up for carbon dioxide emissions.

Cities like Masdar will become the norm, not the exception.

Cool Cities

Green Vehicle Solutions

There are three solutions to reduce carbon dioxide. First the government builds cities, counties and states to reduce carbon dioxide. Second solution is that some cities are providing incentives for hybrid vehicles and lower registrations fees and taxes. Last solution is that many cities now are replacing these polluting old buses with buses that run on cleaner compressed natural gas (CNG) or with hybrid-electric diesel engines.

Energy Efficiency Solutions

Energy efficiency means using less energy through better technology to get more power. There are many solutions to do that. First solution is that making new building which depends on energy efficiency. Also we can use can use new system of lighting which depend on solar energy to reduce the pollution and save the energy. The cities which use energy efficiency can get a benefit from that system. Cities also can get a benefit from energy efficiency by combined heat and power.

Renewable Energy Solutions

Cities can use energy from the renewable sources instead of electricity to reduce the pollution and to save the energy. We can use solar and wind energy to get a power instead of electricity. Also the city can make a contract with the government like many other cities in the world.

TV (Argument)

These days there are many children spending a lot of time front of TV. They are waste their time and this effect on their study and also on their life. There are some people that say television does more harm than good and the other side says it does good more than harm. I will look at the both sides and I strongly believe that TV does more harm than good.

Some people say that children learn many things from TV and for example the programs which improve their skills. Also they say that many children have free time and they can use it by watching TV and this is better than do other bad things. They believe that if their parents watch them carefully and organize their time the TV will be more useful for them. Also they think that we can find many solutions to make TV more useful for children and for example we can put a secret number for adult channels and this will prevent the bad things for children.

The other side says that children waste many hours front of TV without any benefits and if they spend it on their studies will be more useful for them. You can't put a secret number for all channels because in these days there are hundred of channels and also every day there is new channels come. Also parents can't be near their children all the times because some times they are busy for example and in this case the children will be without supervisor. Finally in these days there are a lot of bad things showing on TV if the child watches it will learn bad habits.

In conclusion, I think TV does more harm than good because I know what is on TV these days. Also we can find many useful things for children to use their free times better than TV and improve their skills.

What is about this project

In English 174 we should do a project which includes many things you will have do many steps to finish it. First you should set up your own blog and after that send it to your teacher. In that blog you will put all your assignments on it. Second you should write about your self "profile" and put it in the top of your blog. Then you need to watch a film which called "An convenient truth" it talks about a big issue which called "Global warming". You should first summarize that movie and then write your opinions. After that you should write about carbon footprint then write how you cam measure it and finally put solutions for carbon footprint. Then you should talk about cool cities and explain how it works. Finally you should talks about Masdar city which Abu Dhabi government will build it in the future and then put all your assignments in your blog.

An inconvenient Truth

The movie talks about a big issue called Global Warming. Al Gore who was former vice president showed people the problems and effects which Global warming can cause for the earth. First he said that the biggest cause of Global warming is human or countries activities which increase the amount of carbon dioxide. Those activities effect the atmosphere and also melt the ice in North and South Pole which increases the amount of water and we can see what happened to many countries from that melting for example flooding. Also AL Gore didn’t forget the other causes like cars, factories and nuclear experiments. He determined the biggest countries which cause the Global warming and the USA was first. He didn’t only speak but he showed people a lot of evidence which proved his theory. In the end of this movie Al Gore put forward many solutions to decrease the amount of carbon dioxide and in the same time face Global Warming.

I think that was good and also it has many facts because now we can feel a big difference in climate and this is a reason of Global Warming. There are many solutions to face this issue. First we can find many alternatives sources of energy instead of oil and this can decrease the amount of carbon dioxide and at the same time decrease Global warming. Also we can reduce the number of cars and factories. On the other hand the biggest countries must stop nuclear experiments because it is the main reason of Global Warming.

I know sir you dont agree with me about nuclear experiments but in my opinion section I can write what I believe. :)

Number of Injuries ( Table )

The table shows the sport injuries in 10 different games. Overall, the highest percentages of sport victims are in Australian football and the lowest percentage are in squash and volley ball.

Australian football covers the highest average of sport injuries 24.5% and 83% during the competition and only 7.5% admitted to hospital. Soccer, Rugby, Cricket, Basketball and also Netball are almost the same percentage of sport injuries from 9.2% to 7.5%. Most of those injuries because of practice or during the competition and the highest average of injuries which admitted to hospital are for Rugby. The number of all those injuries for all fife games is approximately 16500 victims. Squash and volleyball cover the lowest percentage with 1.9% for both.

In conclusion, Australian football has the majority of sports injuries but on the other hand volleyball and Squash have the monitory of sports injuries.

Critical Thinking

In our life there are many critical thinkers but the question is that how you know if you critical thinker or not? First you should examine your assumptions and believes. Also you should listen carefully and support your talk by evidences. Most of the critical thinkers are curious. The sample definition of critical thinking is how you prove you talk and it is higher level of thinking. Critical thinking helps to analyze and understand the problems. If you want to be a critical thinker you should ask questions, listen carefully, find solutions and believe what you say. Finally we must know that any body can be critical thinker.

Alcohol (Argument)

Alcohol affects the mind and causes many problems for humans. In many parts of the world there are some governments that ban alcohol in public areas and also when you driving. There are some people that say we must ban alcohol and the other side says that we should not ban it. I will look at both sides and I'm strongly believed that we must ban alcohol.

Some people say that if ban alcohol this means you want billions of people around the world to became criminals and create biggest black market the same as what happened in the USA when they banned alcohol. Also they think that the problem it not alcohol but the problems it's only the people who abuse it. Also when you banned alcohol that mean there are thousand of people who work in alcohol industry they will be without work for example in Mexico there are more than 500 thousand work in the alcohol industry. Finally they think that people are responsible and no problem if we make it legal.

The other side says that many people lose their families,
jobs and marriages due to alcohol. Also alcohol is a contributory factor to huge crimes like what happened in USA when some student killed their friends in the park of his college because he was drunk. There are many deaths and serious injuries caused by drunk drivers because when the person drinks alcohol he can't concentrate when he drives. Also we must know that alcohol damage the mind and causes al lot of problems for the human body. Finally there are many alternatives jobs for those who work in the alcohol industry.

In conclusion, I think we must ban alcohol because it causes a lot of problems for humans and also effect health. We can face the difficulties which will come from the banning of alcohol.

Solutions for Carbon Footprint

There are many solutions to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide. First, we can find alternative for cars for example walk or ride a bike to reduce carbon which come from cars. We can also use filters for factories and but a strong punishment for those factories which don’t use filters. Also the government should reduce the numbers of factories and cars to protect the environment. On the other hand we can use the development of technology to converts carbon dioxide to bicarbonate ions which is not harmful to environment. We can buy more seasonal food instead of processed food.

How to measure the carbon footprint ?

After I measured my footprint I found that I need four planets to live because my footprint was 3.97. I found my percentage of food was 18% and I think this percentage it's not correct because I don’t eat organic food. Also I found 41% for travel and this is a big percentage because I have a big car. The percentage of my house it's also high because there are too many people living in it. Finally h found my percentage of stuff was 18%. I think 3.97 it's very high so I need to reduce that number and in same time reduce carbon footprint.

What is Carbon Footprint ?

A Carbon Footprint is a measure of the impact human activities have on the environment in terms of the amount of greenhouse gases produced, measured in units of carbon dioxide. These gases effect on the atmosphere and this causes a lot of problems for environment.

There are a lot of factors which cause carbon footprint for example there are a lot of factories which cause carbon dioxide and also cars. Also Carbon footprint changes the climate which called in these days Global Warming. The amount of carbon footprint is increasing because the number of factories and cars are increasing ether and also the consuming of energy is increasing.

USA family Expenditure, 1990 and 2000 (pie chart)

These two pie charts show the expenditure of USA family between 1990 and 2000. Overall, in 1990 food was the majority with rent and saving was the minority.

Food and rent covered the highest percentage in the amount of money spent in USA family with 35% and 27% in order. The percentage of food reduced after ten years on the other hand the percentage of rent increased until 34%. Education, Transport and Leisure are almost the same percentage of money spent in USA with 10% for Transport, Leisure and 12% for Education. The percentage of Leisure had dramatically increased after ten years. On the other hand in 2000 less spent was on Education with 8% only. The lowest percentage was for saving in both year with 6% in 1990 and 2% in 2000.

In conclusion, food and rent covered the highest percentage in both year and saving had the minority. There was a dramatic increased for Leisure in 1990 with 12% to 21% in 2000.

SMOKING

In the UAE, most of people are cigarette smokers. Some people believe that smoking must be banned or prevent in all places in Abu Dhabi. On the other hand those who smoking think that we can ban smoking in special places only. This essay will examine the agreement and disagreement of smoking in all Abu Dhabi.

There are several arguments of smoking those who believe that they can smoke in special places. They think that smoking makes them better and it is open their mind and also make them thinking better. Other smokers think that smoking make them happy and they enjoy in their time so you see them smoking in every place. Other thinks that smoking makes them adult so they smoke and that mean they grown up.

However, there are many far more convincing arguments against smoking in any where in Abu Dhabi. The first point is that smoking can causes many diseases and cause also the heart attack. Another point is that smoking cost smokers thousand of dirham monthly. Also the smoking does not affect in smokers only but also for people those who next them. Finally, smoking causes problems for all things smokers, those who are next the smoker and also the environment.

In conclusion, smokers and none smokers have their own believes and each of them think that he is correct. However, I believe that smoking should prevent in all places because we need to keep our country clean and breathe a fresh air.

TV & children (problems and solutions)

In these days children set for many hours in front of TV. This thing causes a lot of problems for those children who watch TV for long time. I will explain now how we cane face this issue to protect our children and their future.

There are many causes of this problem and the first thing is child having a lot of free time and the parents do not help him to spend it in correct way. Also the child sets very close from TV and this cause problems for child eyes. A lot of children set front TV for a long time and without any break and for some children there are no problems if he sets 8 or 10 hours. Also there are a lot of channels which show many things that should not show for children because it is not good compare with their ages.

There are many solutions for those problems which cause this issue. First the parents must take care of their children by knowing what children watch and also prevent them from setting for a long time front of TV. Also we cam educate the children at school and show them the dangerous of spend many hours front of TV. The parent must prevent the bad channels and but only the channels which help the children to improve their skills and also their behavior.

In my opinion the parents should take the all of responsibilities because the children don’t know what better for them. Also in these days we must keep our eyes on children and watch what they watch on TV because there are a lot of bad things in many channels.

Car accidents (problems & solutions)

Every day in UAE we hear about car accidents and many people deaths from those accidents. There are many causes for these problems and we must find the solutions to decrease the numbers of deaths. I will explain now how we can face the cause and find the solutions.

The first solution is that many people having the licenses at age of 18. Also the training period is very short and you can get the license in 1 month only. There are no strict punishments for those who broke rules. There are shops that modify car engines illegally to reach top speed even without any safety equipments. Also the insurance is very low compare to European countries. We can't forget the cause when the person is driving the car such as high speed, careless and tiredness.

We can face those problems by ably these solutions and the first thing is increase the valid age to 21 years old. Also continue with Black Dots systems because it is one of the best solutions to decrease the accidents. Educate people at school about the reasons of accidents and increase the training period. Present fines with post, emails and text messages. Also we can but many radars and cameras to know those people who broke the rules.

In my opinion we can face this issue by ably those solutions to protect the society. It is big issue because the numbers of accidents and deaths increase day after day and we saw what happened in Ghantot Street 1 month ago!

Pollution (problem and solutions)

Pollution is the contamination of air, soil and water by chemical substances that are harmful to human and environment. It killed many children and changed the climate. There are three kinds of pollution air, noise and water pollutions. This essay will review the reasons of this problem and solutions.

There are many reasons to harm the environment. One of main reason of this problem is smog and various chemical. Today people say that greenhouses are producing to make our life easier than before, but they don't know that greenhouses make our world worse by harming the atmosphere. An additional problem is the transportation. Incomplete carbon reactions, unburned hydrocarbons and other elements are factors to create the air pollution. However, these factors come from cars, buses, trains, ships and airplane. Another issue is the Acid rain. Acid rain is created by carbon dioxide and other elements. Acid rain is also damaging and polluting the soil.

There are many reasons to solve this problem. One solution is putting laws. The government are responsible to stop greenhouse produces smog and various chemical. For example greenhouse should filter smog from dangerous elements. Another possibility is recycling. We can recycle newspaper, aluminum and other elements. Also we can grow trees. Trees produce Oxygen and absorb Carbon Oxide. We can reduce the air pollution by using mass transit, bicycle and walking.

In conclusion, we can not stop pollution but we can reduce it by following these solutions. These solutions are also reducing the global worming and Acid rains.

Global Warming (problems & solutions)

Global warming is a big issue we must find solution for it. The movie it talks about what global warming effect and what happen to the earth and also to the people. First effect is reducing the area of icing and this thing kills many polar bears and other animals which live in the North Pole. Other effect is that many children die every year in Africa because Global warming. Malaria spreads in most Africa and kills many children and people.

On the other hand we should talk about cause. First cause that is there are many factories and cars which make CO2 and other emissions. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is one of the most common greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and is regulated through the natural carbon cycle. Those emissions effect on atmosphere and cause Global. Also global warming rises the level of seas and this cause problem for the countries which under that level.

In my opinion we must reduce the number of cars and factories to face the Global warming. Also but filters for factories to reduce the carbon dioxide and in the same time reduce the Global warming. The government also must but rules which prevent the factories work without filters. I think in the future if the people do not analyze the dangerous from Global warming they will be in big problem so we must find the solution to face this important issue.

Blood Diamonds

I will talk about movie that we saw it in last Thursday. The movie was interesting because it talks about real stories. First the movie was concentrated on man who lost his family and after that he worked as a diamond searcher for RUF. Then when he was working he found a big diamond and he kept it in safe place. After that he found a man who know where are his family but to take him to his family he must give the man that big diamond. He agreed then the man took him to his family but they faced a lot of problems. I don’t know what happen after that because we didn’t saw the end. I think this movie shows us what happen when we buy diamonds before we chick if it is free conflict diamonds or not. Also it shows what the children and poor people face in that country they suffer and they need the help.

Rapid Development in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi was a simple city before they discovery of oil but now it becomes one of the most famous cities in the world. These days there are a lot of buildings, cars and factories. This essay will examine the causes of the rapid development in Abu Dhabi and look at some of the effects.

In the past Abu Dhabi didn’t have a strong economy but after they discovered oil every thing changed. The number of cars and buildings after that discovery increased rapidly and the economy became stronger. Also the number of factories increased because if the country has the main part which is oil it can create or make many different materials and import them to different countries. On the other hand no benefit from a strong economy if the country doesn’t have a good leader. In Abu Dhabi there was Al Sheikh Zayed who did a lot of thing for his country and his city specially. He used the money which got it from oil outcome to develop his country by building many schools, hospitals, stations and many other buildings.

There are several effects for rapid development of Abu Dhabi. First point that is sand changed to green ground because in these days the government looks at plants and they try to increase them in Abu Dhabi city. Also the numbers of jobs increase every day because of that development. This development changes the climate so we feel these days the weather is not like before for example in these days the cold continued for seven months. The Infrastructure of Abu Dhabi city becomes better than 30 years ago.

On the other hand this development has many negative consequences for the city. The first point that when the numbers of cars and factories increasing at the same time the amount of emissions increase. Also this development day after day removes our traditions and in the same time maybe our culture. There is an important issue which is this development and the increasing of cars numbers due to traffic congestion in the roads.

Any development in the world has two faces one is positive and the other is negative. In my opinion we can make any development be positive 100% by facing the negatives and try to fix or solve them. If Abu Dhabi keep this work it will be one of the most important cities in the world.

Conflict Diamonds

First thing, conflict diamonds are some times called blood diamonds because many people and children are died from it. As a customer you can help many people and also many children by buy conflict-free diamonds.

Most conflict diamonds come from Africa and especially from Angola, Congo, Liberia and Sierra Leone. Those countries have many wars between each other for diamonds.

In 2003 there is international certification called the Kimberley process which try to stop the conflict diamonds. They put many suggestions to avoid wars and now the conflict diamonds is less than before but this not mean is finished!!

NOW how we can stop conflict diamonds and help those people

First, you must be sure about the source of these diamonds and if they got it from these countries (Angola, Congo, Liberia, and Sierra Leone) don’t buy it. You should check from the shops which sell these diamonds and ask the Jeweler from where it comes these daimonds?. The last thing you should do it is read about conflict diamonds and try to be sure about what you buy of diamonds and think about those people and children. They suffer of conflict diamonds.

In my opinion, I think stop conflict diamonds is very difficult because in each country in the world there are good people, bad people and those bad people will try to get money from any thing and they don’t care about the children and the poor people.

The world Diamonds Trade

First we will talk about how the diamonds comes? In the beginning the carbon turns into the diamonds by extreme pressure and high temperature about 1000 C. The diamonds goes up to the surface by The Magma Via. The biggest amount of diamonds comes from Africa.

The biggest company of diamonds in the world is (De Beers consolidated mines Ltd) and they bring the diamonds from South Africa. They have or control more than 80% of diamonds in the world. In 20th century they keep the price of diamonds high by restrict the amount of diamonds.

Antwerp city has been a diamonds center for 600 years. The people who associated with the diamonds trade in this city are Indian families and Lebanese. In these days 1500 polishers and cutters are left Antwerp city. The percentage of the worlds rough diamonds pass through Antwerp city is 80%.

The percentage of the worlds rough diamonds are cut and polished in India is 90%. The most rough diamonds come from Antwerp city and Tell Aviv city. The Indian workers get 40 cents for each cut and polished gem. Dubai now is developing in this course and it tries to be the center of diamonds.
